Ukraine is a state in Eastern Europe, bordering Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Russia and Belarus. Its population is about 45 million people. Ukraine is the largest among the countries that are completely within the borders of Europe, the area of Ukraine is 603.7 thousand km2. Ukraine has access to two seas – the Black Sea and Azov Sea. The main waterway is the river Dnieper. As an independent state Ukraine is quite young – it became independent on August 24, 1991.
Ukraine is a beautiful country in South-Eastern Europe, one of the largest in territory, with a very developed culture, rich folk traditions and diverse nature. Most of the population are Ukrainians, a large part are also Russians, Bulgarians, Belarusians, Moldovans, and Crimean Tatars. Due to this mix of peoples, Ukraine has a unique diverse culture. Every culture found its own place here. June 28, 1996 the Constitution of Ukraine was adopted, according to which Ukraine is a republic state. It is composed of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and 24 regions. President is the head of the state. He is elected by the citizens of Ukraine on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage by secret ballot for a term of 5 years and not more than two consecutive terms. The only legislative body is the Parliament – the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The highest authority in the system of executive power is the Cabinet of Ministers. The bearer of sovereignty and the sole source of power in government are people. The main state holiday is the Independence Day of Ukraine celebrated on August 24. |
